Not only in America it came to light that Canada does the same kind of "data trawling". All kinds of bs about over site and the rest of the crap that you get from the people who came up with these ideas.
 
At least it's not as bad as China. I love watching Anderson Cooper 360 when he does a piece on China and he interjects with something along the lines of, "...we have just been cut off the air in China for the moment...", then continues with the story. ;)

They also block social media and probably monitor the underground stuff too. It would be safe to assume they check all packets leaving and coming into China for any data and block the stuff they can and arrest those who violate the laws...
