Hello,

I own a crappy name and just got an offer for $2,000 for it. Well, the name is 2 generic words put together, but i'd never imagined it would fetch $2K.

At first I thought this was going to be an appraisal scam but it looks to be legit.

What do you think?
Hello,
I wonder if *** is for sale? I'm interested in purchasing that domain name.

I responded..

Then he did with.

I'm only interested in the domain name without the following website, so how about $ 2.000? (USD)
Best regards,

I responded and he said..

Yes, looks like we have a deal then. Please send me your full name and address + your bank's name, address and wire transfer information. I will then transfer $ 2.000 to your bank account. Once you have the money I will send a request for your domain name "****", which you have to accept. Sounds good?

Does this sound legit? My dad as vice pres of my bank so he's going to run a check on his name to make sure nothing pops up.

I've never had this type of encounter so looking to see if you guys think its legit.

Direct Wires are a very risky business -- but since your dad is the VP, so it might be a bit safer for you. It might be an idea to ask if he / she can use escrow.com (split or suck up the costs).

I would be careful giving your bank information to him. Best bet would be to try and do escrow. He can wire the money to escrow if he wanted. Its the safest way I think.

escrow.com is not safe.
They are open to scams as well.
I do not like the sound of "without the following website."
Did you domain name originally have a site associated with it?

Yes,

It's built around a theme "World's largest....". #1 in google for that keyword - but its no where near breaking any records.. And the domain has neither World's or Largest in it.

It is a .com btw.

Sounds legit, but you never know.
I would use escrow also, or sedo escrow even.

Besides that of course check everything you can about the guy, name, company, site. If it's some kind of scam a few searches in google would usually show up something.

Good luck

No returns for his email address in any major search engines.

No returns for his name in any major search engines. Guys sounds like he is from another country because of his name, but very fluent English.

Email is GMAIL. But so is mine :P

Just a word of advice -- DON't ever consider that as a point of disqualification. I am from India but I am very-very fluent in English. =)

i agree, that name does not make it so far fetched as you first made it sound. as far as name and email, he could have made either of those up last week. so not finding them in google does not seem relevant to me. the question i would be asking is, is not using this form of payment going to be a deal breaker? i would think if he's willing to shell out 2 grand ... then no.

I would reply approaching him about the possibility of using another method of payment, such as escrow.com. If he sounds open to it, or replies with a legitimate reason why he would prefer to wire transfer, ok. If he does a bunch of stammering, and protesting that he can only do wire transfer and asks you outright for your personal info again, this would throw up another red flag for me.

Good question. Haha.

The name is AddStuff.com
Why is that name Crappy?
It's not really premium, but, not crappy.

However, it does seem little odd buyer offering $2K from the start though.
Most buyer will offer much less than what they really want to pay, about 20% to 50%.
Or, this buyer is willing to pay 5K?

But, again, this buyer may be different ;)

Copper, I just did not want to lose this sale - but I did remember reading the tips shared above somewhere deep in the Exclusive section hehe.

I owe my dad like $600 and this would pay that off. Gah I hope its legit, :)

Why would wire be risky as seller?
I really would like to know.

I always ask for bank wire, but, only about 10% buyers are willing.
