Is there a reason why this number was valuable? Was it the area code or prefix? Without understanding Mandarin how could anyone guess?

Seems more like the "supply and demand" end of domaining. There's only 1,000 possible NNN combinations and owners aren't selling for less than mid X,XXX. These types of domains are extremely liquid at this price level, so to me it would appear to be a solid investment, as numeric domains (especially NNN and NNNN) have done nothing but rise in value in recent years.
