Does it matter if it gets that many searches? It would be worth the small reg fee in my opinion.

1. If it's more than one word make sure you are puting the words in Quotes.
example: Fire Engine = 1,370,000 "Fire Engine" = 146,000 Google
2. What's the Overture on the word(s)? http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion

3. Check Alexa Trafic Ranking on it and on .net and .com just to see if it is popular at all.
