A private auction was held for the new gTLD .Cloud and neither Amazon nor Google won the auction.
What is surprising is that Amazon and Google are both among the top 100 cloud providers.
Cloud hosting is one of the biggest business of Amazon. Losing .Cloud comes as a shock.

Interesting news. While it seems surprising that these giants wouldn't want to have .cloud, it also could make some sense. What they are likely saying by going this route is that they don't have faith in the new TLD entries currently being rolled out. Whether or not this new avalanche of TLD market players will succeed is something that only time will tell, but if a TLD directly relates to your business and you are a huge entity, the bet on their success is relatively small. Personally, in the case of .cloud, and given their long term Internet experience, I'm pretty surprised Amazon didn't take that bet.
