especially with generic one or two word names?

Like theater.tk or hotmovies.tk (maybe a word play on theater tickets or hotmovie tickets)?

I've registered these two domain names in the TK landrush a couple of weeks back and am wondering if I just flushed money down the toilet or is it really worth something.

I would rephrase: how bad... it's a junk TLD and one of the few you can even get for free. For that reason it is often associated with spam or malware.
.tk has nothing special really, it's the TLD for a micronation that nobody can pinpoint on a map :)

The aftermarket is virtually nil. I found this on DNSalePrice:
Milch $220
Health $500
I thought there were more but clearly it's not hot extension.
For development purposes why not but this extension is ranking at the bottom for sure ;)

A lesson learned is worth it's price. Don't consider it a complete loss but yes, the tld has no recognition or market that I am aware of. The only hope to salvage the names would be development but that is not recommended either because you would lose a ton of visitors to .com and other tlds.

You guys are right.

I registered hotmovies.tk and theater.tk thinking that it would be a play on "tickets" like in theater tickets etc.

A lesson learned, I will park these on Sedo and see if they can recoup at least some of the costs :P

What about .rs?

I was thinking maybe a play on toys.rs or something might be of some value?

Thanks for your replies.

I think you can register the domain name as long as you go through an rs nic approved registrar.

http://www.rnids.rs/?lang=en

From http://www.rnids.rs/include/data/list0029_en.pdf

Registration of .rs domains within rsTLD registry is performed within the
following address spaces:
· .rs Â* intended for all interested users;
· .co.rs Â* intended for business users;
· .org.rs Â* intended for all other registered organizations;
· .edu.rs Â* intended for educational institutions and organizations;
· .in.rs Â* intended for citizens of Serbia;
· .c.rs (delegated) Â* intended for academic and research network of
Serbia;
· .gov.rs (delegated) Â* intended for state institutions of the Republic of
Serbia.
