Thanks MiloMan - drop dates is a question that often stumps me.

This one however - are you sure it's right?

Where did I get the information?
Each day I compare the zonefiles....

Tracking the dropped/added domains and date.
I then cross reference the domains to another table
to get the <domain> <server> association.

+-----------+----------------------------+------------+---------------------+
| domain | server | updated | lastupdate |
+-----------+----------------------------+------------+---------------------+
| YAHOO.COM | whois.networksolutions.com | 2002-06-12 | 2002-09-17 04:54:25 |
+-----------+----------------------------+------------+---------------------+

Later..

So ... the "average days" information you are posting is the average number of days that it took for a domain name to be released after it has been removed from the zone file? Sorry, just trying to figure out what the number represents.

Example case:

hoho.com gets removed from the zonefile

removed: sep 3 2002
added : sep 10 2002

10 - 3 = 7 days spread. Domain was available 6 days after it
was dropped in the zonefile. (Domains registered today, will
show in the zonefile tomorrow. So where the domain showed
up on the 10th, it was registered sometime on the 9th.)

That's all I was tracking.

I'm working on more advanced tracking techniques but it'll be
a while...

Domains also drop from the zone files when they go on registry hold - and then are replaced when they come off hold. I don't know what the total number of domains in this state is, but we have several hundred...

Thanks for posting those stats. It was really interesting. One word of advice though. Don't spend too much time and energy into compiling those lists. Once WLS kicks in, it won't matter on what day (forgot *day*) they drop. Just a friendly advice ;)

Thanks!

Hi kvinsencius,
thanks for your reply.
Is this what I think it is?
Verisign gets all the domains! Then domains are awarded on first come first served basis according to their WLS(previous snapnames subscribtion)?
Is this right?

Hi DVDRIP,

WLS stands for Wait-Listing Service. This will change the whole ball game for catching domains. Read all about it here:
http://www.snapnames.com/wlsapproved.html

Thanks!

The WLS and SnapBack subscriptions are completely separate, but yes, it does give Verisign complete, monopoly control of the expiring domain market...

Didn't they say that they will transfer the existing snapback subscriptions to WLS?

Guest
No. They said they will try to purchase the WLS for existing SnapBacks on your behalf.

In the first WLS proposal, Verisign was talking about grandfathering SnapNames on all their SnapBacks when they finally went live. The domain registrar community balked and that was removed from the proposal.

SnapNames has the class to try to preserve your SnapBack investment however, and they will be attempting to purchase WLS subscriptions in the WLS "LandRush" process (still to be defined by Verisign). There is no guarantee that they will be able to purchase your particular SnapBack, however they will give you a WLS "credit" to be applie to another domain if they can't get your particular choice.

Not a bad thing at all in the scheme of things.

May I ask where that table does come from ?

Kunkrab,

I created the table. Put it simply, disable recursion and query
a domain. I parse out
<domain> <server> <updated> <lastupdate>

Hope that helps :)
