The Bush administration is objecting to the creation of a .xxx domain, saying it has concerns about a virtual red-light district reserved exclusively for Internet pornography.

Michael Gallagher, assistant secretary at the Commerce Department, has asked for a hold to be placed on the contract to run the new top-level domain until the .xxx suffix can receive further scrutiny. The domain was scheduled to receive final approval Tuesday.

"The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children," Gallagher said in a letter that was made public on Monday.

I can see their point, I mean, if they move all the porn to .xxx domains if will make it much harder to access it from the workplace, or from school libraries for example. Employers or Education Authorities could choose to simply block all .xxx domains, and where's the profit in that? Much better to keep all the porn in the .com domain where everyone can easily get to it! </SARCASM>

Huh, I'm pretty supprised that Bush stopped that. But it' s right move.
First .xxx is owned by privat person and it makes him reach - I asked why?
Second - it's legal problem about current owners of adults sites - there are 1000's of them and their companies. If some firm owns now for example busty.com or tits.com or porn.com or hotmilfs.com etc. who should own first busty.xxx ???? and whay first company or second ?
Third - it's very lawfull as they said in letter

“The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children and opposing the creation of a new top-level domain devoted to adult content,” Gallagher wrote. “We also understand that other countries have significant reservations regarding the creation of a .xxx TLD… The volume of correspondence opposed to creation of a .xxx TLD is unprecedented.”

It's very easy then create fast and simple directory with accessing adult sites.

Fourth - it's will LOWER income on selling .com .net .org etc. domains if only adults names could be .xxx nor other extensions.

This is actually a big PLUS for the adult industry. Most of the poeple there oppose .xxx because they see it as a step towards more regulation, filtering, and even elimination attempts (first we make .xxx optional, then mandatory, then we require ISP's to get consent forms to access .xxx). To say nothing of plans to charge $70/year/name (can you say sin tax....) or the trademark hassles for existing webmasters who have to secure the .xxx version.

True enough, and I've always thought that domian names should be strictly first-come, first-serve and the WIPO should only have power over infringing content, not domain names. But that's not the world we live in. And it's especially tricky when you are going to be pushing, prodding, or even forcing people off their .coms. Imagine how BangBus would feel if someone else got the .xxx and 2 years later all adult content was forced off .com. You can see how they might see this TLD as a problem, no?

Sa la vie

Things change, and I guess a situation like that would demonstrate how well any site (or company) in that situation can change with the new world.

I for one would be happy with a forced move to xxx. Not that it's fair, but what is? Yeah they wouldn't like it. Lots of industries objected to the Internet too. Forced them off what they thought was stable positions. If I remember right, there were big time objections to anything "commercial" gumming up the "information highway". Go to go with the flow, adapt and make the best of whatever is thrown at you. Accept the alternative extensions for example, including xxx.

Yes, he didn't think about that in his crusade to "stamp out XXX". The .xxx TLD would be a very bad thing. Herd all the horses into the corral so they are easy to shoot.

Optional and then mandatory for sure. What would the effects on the adult industry and free speech (and the internet) be when very large IPs got tired of taking government heat and started massively shutting off access to the .xxx TLD?

Adult moves a damned lot of bandwidth too. Some very large hosting companies with many employees are 100% adult. They would blow out like a candle overnight almost.

Just my political opinions :)
