Can I register a .com.au domain? I'm a UK resident

I'm looking at expanding my business and focusing on the Australian market, setting prices in Australian dollars etc.

I'd like to register the .com.au version of my domain, but not sure if I'm able as I've heard you need to hold an ABN. I'm British and live in the UK.

Am I able to register a .com.au in my own name legally?

unless you live in Australia or your have a company there you cannot register .com.au. I know that some registrars offer proxy service "under the table".

Hey Fluffy..due to regulations and policies a registrant for a DotAU domain extension needs to furnish a few details before going ahead with the registration procedure.. It would either have to be an
ABN (Australian Business Number)
ACN (Australian Company Number)
RBN (Australian Registered business)
Registered Trademark (this can be international)

A few registrars do provide a proxy contact handle for the registrant to go ahead with this or else it just isn't possible. Otherwise if you do have someone residing there and who could do it on your behalf then that should help.. Also you have the option of trying out a DotAU reseller since the chances of you landing a domain at a cheaper rate is much more and they just might do it on behalf of you..

Yes you can, providing you obtain the required ARBN paperwork first and only register or BUY the .com.au or net.au names that are substantially related to your business of domain monetization and those names do not contravene the various policies
My .au Australian names are for sale to any business that can fit the eligibility including business from any country.

How do I go about obtaining the required ARBN paperwork? I did a search on this on Google but nothing helpful came up.

I'm also interested in these under-the-table registration service providers. I would like to retain from going down this route, but I'm concerned a competitor is going to register our domain and we will lose this valuable share in the market costing us dearly in the future - so would be a last resort.

Can a registar not register the domain in their own business name? I've registered quite a few .co.uk's with registars and some register the whois information in the business name to protect the customers details.

I'm looking at purchasing the .com.au domains this week, and looking for a solution as quickly as possible.

I have found www.asiaregistry.com which allows you to register .com.au domains, and the registrant acts as an "agent" for a fee.

Cost for the domain registration is $30 for the two years, and then an additional $65 agent fee on top. Do these prices seem reasonable?

I'm looking at registering aboubt 8 versions of my domain (hyphens, mispelt versions etc) in order to protect it.

Does the registrant seem pretty repuatable to you guys?

www.asiaregistry.com appears to allow you to register .com.au domain's without an ABN (customers from outside Australia), and asiaregistry will act as your "agent", "point of contact".

After searching this forum there seems to be quite a few users using this registar to register domains such as the .asia domains that require you to hold business numbers in the country etc.

I could not think of a more blatant violation of the .au rules
I notice asiaregistry also sells .au sub domains
Maybe the other members are buying .au sub domains

[SIZE=-1] There are quite a few registrars who offer a contact handle when it comes to registering a ccTLD or sTLD for genuine registrants to aquire their domain..however, this is done only after confirming a few necessary details which includes obtaining a photo identification proof of the registrant..this helps registrants from different geographic locations to acquire their domain property..

asia registry seems to be a little high on their pricing..and an additional $ 65 agent fee on top goes a little overboard[/SIZE]
