My wife has a laptop she got from her school.

Del D6xx series. Windows XP but it has an enterprise login.

When she logs in, it accepts her password, starts to log her in then logs her off within 15 seconds. This does it in normal mode and safe mode.

I tried renaming the profile (her's, the default, and all users) and it did not help so it does not seem like a profile issue.

The PC is set to connect to the school's network but she hasn't been connected to it in well over a year and hasn't had an issue yet (she's been using our local connection here).

Any suggestions? I'd rather not reload windows since it did not come with a rescue disc.

Is this happening when she logs into the network or just logs into the computer profile?

Just when she logs into her profile. I ruled out a profile issue, I renamed her profile (profile_backup) and it recreated it (well, a basic one) and it still happened.

We do not need to log onto our network and I'm assuming it is just using the last known profile for her login. My work laptops do the same thing. You can log off of the corporate network if you have a profile already set up on the laptop but if not, you'll need to be connected to allow the servers build your profile on that computer.

Too bad I don't know the admin login and password but thank god it is not encrypted.

Edit: After some GooglingI found a possible solution that did not help:

1.At the Recovery Console command prompt, type cd system32, and then press ENTER.
2.Type copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe, and then press ENTER.
3.Type exit, and then press ENTER.

Yea, i was just googling for some info. Looking at all the other people with the same issue,
1.At the Recovery Console command prompt, type cd system32, and then press ENTER.2.Type copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe, and then press ENTER.3.Type exit, and then press ENTER.
seems to be an option.

Another option is to use the repair feature on the disk. You wont lose any files, it will just fix any system files, if that is what is wrong.

I don't have the admin password which leads to:

Thank you, I'll give that a try.

Edit: Now is a great time for Nero to start spazzing out & Roxio (that came with this PC) won't burn ISO images unless I purchase the full version (yeah, right).

The mount is failing 100% of the time, even when I boot up in safe mode (well, to the login screen, I can log in but it instantly logs me of) twice, (So it won't save).

I don't know the administrator password to do the repair so it looks like I'm stuck doing the old format & reinstall

I have a USB floppy drive (this is a laptop we're talking about) but no discs. I'm about to say screw it and format the whole drive.

Or call the college's tech support and have them give me a password (I highly doubt that they will)

How about this, any programs to let me get the license key for products like Office that came with the laptop?
