I've just bought my GF a domain with her Christian name

a-n-n-e.com

I've noticed that these names have started to grow in popularity recently, and all variations of my name have long gone. Is this too new a fashion to have been traded much, or does anyone have any idea of potential values?

So new, in fact, that YOU just started it! Personally, I cannot stand a hyphen ... never mind THREE of 'em! Sorry. Good Luck.

SEO's not prejudiced against hyphens.

"SEO's not prejudiced against hyphens."

To some degree this is true ... but he bought it for his girlfriend! Probably a Christmas present. I don't know for sure, but I suspect SEO's are irrelevant here. I'm more concerned with her using this domain for e-mail, or the like. Imagine her having to explain THIS address to her friends ... just one opinion, though. Good Luck.

I can't claim credit for starting it I'm afraid and a lot of names have gone by now.

s-e-x.com
c-a-r-s.com
d-a-v-e.com
b-o-b.com

try a few you will see what I mean.

SEs strip out the hyphens, so a-n-n-e finds about 13 million pages. This is actually bad for the name I suspect.

She can just sent messages to her friends and they can add the name into the address book without type-in. That point is irrevalant.

I have "Tamela.net", if anyone is interested in this for their woman or themselves.

Not a very common name, but infinitely better than T-A-M-E-L-A.net ... yes? Good Luck.

Not much use if your name is Anne though. Actually I think she would rather have had something with cats in it. :D

I bought her www.lovelysun.com a while ago, but she hasn't got round to doing much with it yet. (I expect it will be down to me!).

I'm not sure what to do with www.a-n-n-e.com. It's probably easiest just to alias it to the other site.

I see that even with personal names to be given as gifts folks here are pretty much focused on .com. I mean why not your respective ccTlds; .US if you live here in the US. IMO, it makes a whole lot more sense than .com (or for that matter any other tld including the .name thingy). In addition, one can still find a cute, desirable name (if not the perfect match) in .US even now. Just a few weeks ago, I got my wife her exact first name (5 letters) in .US; I know she'd be excited to use this, especially giving it as her e-mail address as mail @ molly.us (not real; ;)) to her friends/family and getting a "wow that's so cool " type reaction.

Letter and hyphen separations in an attempt to make up a name look very gimmicky and ackward to use. Says I couldn't get the name I wanted so I settled for this sorry sod instead. Sorry.

Totally agree Mole & Heat. Using your own country code extension for personal names makes a lot more sense. I have very common first and last names but still got my firstlast.us as well as my 3 inititals RLJ.us. Both perfect for personal email and sites.

.com is the established extension. Anything else shows that you were late to the net or couln't afford a better one or you're a small local business with no international aspirations. I also have a problem in England. As our treasonous government promises to give away my country - do I use .co.uk or .eu? Also neither UK or EU refer to countries.

Considering hyphens, in some cases hyphens can enhance the name. Two of my names illustrate this.

Hugh-G-Rection.com (meaningless without the hyphens)
b-i-g-g-e-r.com (the hyphens enhace the concept of expansion)

I think that visual impression is an important element for a base site, and type-in rich names should be used for aliases.

This is just complete and utter nonsense (no offense :) )!

.com is ONE established extension. Do you mean to tell me that .net and .org are not established extensions? .info .biz and .us are new extensions - with the simple passage of time they will be established extensions as well.

To have anything other than .com means you were late to the net? So what! If you are late to a party does that mean you are banned from attending and should just go home? If you don't have .com it means you can't afford it? Nonsense. Maybe the owner just doesn't want to sell. But in your convoluted way of thinking anyone who wants to use their name on the net must have the .com or just stay off the net. How silly is that?

And why on earth would a personal name need a commercial (.com) address? You really think that having a name that is riddled with hyphens (rendering it worth less than zero) is better as long as it is a .com? You've got to be kidding!

Your thinking is so mired in the past it is truly regrettable. The whole world is changing around you and you are totally unaware it's happening.

Other than those minor points we are in complete agreement :)

Yup, the .net version is better for 'established' internet personal names imo. I've got the generic on .net, so has my gf. :D

I've received a lot of offers to buy my name, but its priceless :)
