I went through the yellow pages to find traffic .co's. They have a lot of ads that run nationally now. They get pretty good type-ins because that's how people are getting to them. I did this right after .co went public but you just gotta be creative. I made a large list of potential domains and went through them to find one's that wouldn't infringe on any trademarks (you gotta love the NO CLAIM IS MADE TO THE EXCLUSIVE RIGHT TO USE "word" APART FROM THE MARK AS SHOWN disclaimer). Out of the hundred or so in the list of finance/life insurance domains only 3 didn't infringe any trademarks and got enough traffic to be worth considering.
The traffic has met my expectations but then again I put a lot of time into finding the right domains. These sites also advertise on billboards and other print advertising.
