Market research :)

Please contact me with subject heading ".co.uk lists" if you would be interested in receiving .co.uk domains both detagged & suspended in your inbox, this is something I am currently working on and would charge a small fee, to be decided.

Thanks

I'd pay for lists of suspended addresses if I didn't know them already

Thanks for your input Revs.

Although I am no mind reader :) & couldnt say if any of the names would reflect what you knew already.

Just wondering how you go about this. Is it the same as most of us UK domain masters, who just run massive queries on lists with WHOIS programs?

If so, I have some news for you - they will be implementing restrictions on the WHOIS server which will cripple our ability to run these queries. IP banning will be implemented.
Check out Nominet for the latest documentation concerning this.

Do you think it will affect detagged.co.uk dev? I've got a name with them.

I'm watching a name which has been detagged in July 2002, and haven't changed to suspended status.

Anyone have similar problem ?

A couple of years being detagged isn't unusual,

I only seriously track suspended addresses - just keep an eye on detagged.

Surely IP banning is great for the little guy (like me!) who dials up over a modem and has a randomly assigned IP address?

I think Nominet may be trying to speed things up. I had a couple of domains that expired in January and were detagged. Earlier this month (Feb) I got notification from Nominet that they had expired and would I like to renew for £94..... Never had this chase up letter before.

I'm going to just ignore one of them and reply to the other saying "No thanks I don't want it anymore" Will be interesting to see the difference in detagged/suspended/dropped times between the two of them.

They can be, if you get good ones. I've had no problems selling mine :)

Great. I heard they can be a hassle to transfer ownership. Is that true

Mole,

I'm not sure with other registrar but if you register this from openSRS registrar, you can get the profile (username and password) to manage the .uk domains.

Hope this help and if you are interested to register .uk, let me know.

Regards,
tw

Yes and no.

They certainly take a long time to transfer, but all 3 transactions I've done so far have gone fine.

You need to:-

1. Request a domain transfer form (DTF) from Nominet (they snail-mail it to you)
2. Complete 1/2 the DTF and send it, together with a letter addressed to Nominet, to the buyer
3. The buyer completes the other 1/2 of the DTF, and writes his/her own letter to Nominet
4. The buyer sends the DTF and the two letters to Nominet
5. About 4-8 weeks later, Nominet updates the ownership information
6. [This can actually be done at any time in the sequence] You need to transfer control of the domain over to the buyer. They won't be able to change their contact details, but they'll be able to change DNS settings etc. To do this, move the domain to a registrar that allows names to be "pushed" to other accounts, then push it to the buyer's account. 123reg.co.uk is a good example of a registrar that supports this.

Nominet's site and documentation that comes with the transfer form goes into detail about how to complete the DTF, what needs to go into the letters etc.

Hope this helps!

Wow, that sucks.

Thanks for your counsel, genki!

Watch, I am eyeing a detagged name that I hope detagged.co.uk can get for me. .co.uk is not for me and I won't buy it except under very special circumstances. Thanks.

One way round the cumbersome ownership transfer route is to list the owner of each domain as domainname.co.uk, so that if you had exampledomain.co.uk the owner would be exampledomain.co.uk. When selling the domain you would update the contact info on the domain to that of the purchaser, give him/her the Nominet registration certificate and change the tag of the domain to that of their preferred registrar. Simple, and it works.

I encourage you to run that past Nominet's legal department and see what they say. I think you'll find that setting the registrant to 'domainname.co.uk' constitutes an invalid registration; liabel for deletion. There is no such registrant as 'domainname.co.uk' - it's not an entity, so you couldn't prove ownership (by the way the certificates, which will be done away with soon, doesn't prove a thing).

With regards to OpenSRS, you might be able to push the domain name into a seperate profile but the OpenSRS profile cannot manage the Nominet registrant details. It's only effectively a 'wrapper'.
