hi, i just thinking 2 develop a forum, but how to make money of it ?

is it only by taking payment for registration?

You won't get anyone to pay unless its established as a leader in the field of the market your forum relates to, other than that you make money off selling advertising spots to the users & outside advertisiers, and ppc revenue such as google etc.., you could also establish a huge user base and sell the site down the road.

Another thing to consider are the number of potential users. If you enter into a larger market you are going to have a much better chance of making more money.

Generating revenue from forums is one of the hardest ways of making money on the net. But if you find a Nich market, or you pay for advertising for while they can work. It does take alot of hard work to make it pay off.
