Its atleast 6.00, but I'm not sure about any other fees. That is why if you see a register offering under 6, they are trying to upsell you on hosting and other services. Godaddy is one such site, although they are not under 6, they are close, so a few upsells are what helps their bottem line.

BTW, I'd rather pay 8.88 for a name (NameCheap), and help them keep in business then 6.00 and have them out of business, and then I'd be forced to transfer my names.

what if you have the 70k$, open 1 registrar then use that 70k$ again to open another registrar, etc, until you have enough registrar to compete with pool?

But even then you will compete vs godaddy and chances of you winning is probably almost 10%!

Godaddy don't catch anything

I've just say this in other forums, but I'll repeat it here.
I backordered a couple of domains one dropping yesterday and other dropping today at godaddy a week ago.
Yesterday, arround 1:10 Central time the domain showed available at eNom.
I was trying to register it each minute since 1:00pm.

Today, I did it again !, the domain showed available arround 1:15 PM.

So, Godaddy, is a big no-no, really. I heard once somebody told they try to catch the domain name just TWICE a day !!
So anybody can bit them, really, by hand, like I did.

There is also a quartualy fee to be paid. Didn't find any info about how much.

It is variable. It depends on how many names you have. It also depends on what you plan on doing with your accredidation. It also depends on how many other registrars there are.

Small registrars that are just out to sell names and are not going after drops can get an exemption from the quarterly fee. But for anybody going after drops, the fee is usually $xx,xxx per year.

On top of the quarterly fee, there is also a per-transaction fee. Registrars pay ICANN a small amount for every registration/renewal/transfer (domains don't really only cost $6 to registrars)

If you want to learn more, read the 2005-06 budget proposal that ICANN just published. The relevant section is here.

That is actually untrue.

They've caught me around 1000 domains during the last year and they caught me 5 today.

I've also got like 20 with them.
Of course they work if : you backorder just with them and there are barely required names of course you win.

Try to backorder with godaddy and pool/enom. Godaddy won't ever win a name to them. ;)

They aren't as successful against enom, snapnames and pool as they were last year, although they do still beat them occasionally.

They still only have 3 or 4 registrars working to catch drops for them, where as pool and enom will soon have over a hundred each (I'm probably exaggerating a bit there, but possibly not much).

I was reading on ICANN home page and it seems to be a bit complicated process of becomming an accredited registrar. Anyone have a clue how much $$$ I need to spend to succeed? Im sure it will cost a fortune ;)

ICANN requires a non-refundable $2,500 application fee, $70,000 in "liquid capital," and $500,000 insurance coverage.

Plus, you need money to: develop or license software, rent an office, advertise, staff an office, buy servers, etc..

I would be interested to know how much money some of the existing registrars used to startup their operations.

Any registrars care to disclose?

Wow that sounds like a lot. At that rate it would be vary hard to have more then one registar going at once. But I guess if you got one started and it was earning a good cash flow, why not reinvest in a 2nd one?

(Like godaddy's wildwestdomains.com)

That was to be my point :
Why not take some cheap reseller that allows API and try catch by scripts?
It can be Directi, eNom and WildWest, you have your three ""registrars"" to start with.
