Can anyone tell me, how can some registrars can have so fast domain lookups? And there are so many sites that list expiring or deleted domains. The Whois servers normally don't allow more than 5-6 queries per second. Is there a commercially available domain names database?

Registrars have direct connections to the registries. I dont think a registrar is limited in the number of queries that they can perform at the registry level.

A list of registered domains is available through Verisign. They are called master zone files. With the zone files you can use software that you can load in proxy servers to scan the domains. One such software is DomainResearchTool.

Verisign's list contains only domains that have nameservers. I need an updateable list of all domains currently registered. If anyone can offer it, contact me.

A said above registrars have direct connections to the registry.
I think there actually is a limit to the amount of request a registrar can send to the registry. That's the reason why companies like Enom etc set up so many sham registrars in order to catch dropping names. They can then send multiple queries

You are talking about apples and oranges.

Tauron,
Registrars have unlimited access to the database.

SDS,
Companies like Enom, Pool, and Snapnames have multiple credentials so they
can use them during drop time.

you may check for dropping names at justdropped.com.
good luck
