I think it depends on both the extension and the registrar (for some odd reason). For example, us and org almost always resolve for me within minutes or even in seconds (not hrs) at all the firms I use.

However, sometimes com will also resolve in a few minutes at one firm but at another registrar they can take hrs or even a full day or 2 at times. For some odd reason the slowness with com happens a lot at Enom, especially on weekends, where perhaps staff looks at it and not there, I am guessing.

I notice from the time I registrer a domain name with WWD and then set up the account on my server I can see the site already.. But I have some clients their ISP I guess does not update the DNS for a day or so.. It is nice to see things update that quickly.

I believe it was early last fall when they changed the root updates from every 12 hours to every 5 minutes.

Keep in mind that once the root update takes place, it is not necessarily a matter of how often ISP's "update" themselves in order to get the new registration, but whether they have cached information on hand at all. If you attempt to resolve a domain through your ISP's DNS server BEFORE the root has been updated with your newly registered domain, it may take up to 24 hours for the ISP DNS server to expire its cached record. However, if the ISP does not have cached info, then the domain will be resolved as soon as 5 minutes after the domain is registered -- regardless of how often they "update the DNS".

A probable explanation for your observation regarding clients' inability to access the site is that the client has already tried to "go" to the domain in their browser before instructing you to register the domain. This attempt to access the site will cause the ISP to attempt to resolve the domain without success. Subsequent attempts to "go" to the site after the domain is registered will not query the root DNS servers, because the ISP will return the cached information of "host not found".

Similarly, the client's computer itself may cache the DNS. To clear the client's DNS cache, they can reboot, or type "ipconfig /flushdns" from the command line (on Windows).

I always wondered if DNS caching was what was happening on the client or what.. That makes sense but gosh I see some people cough cough hack AOL taking several days in some cases.

I use SBC and if I can't see a new site I can reboot the router and it will go out and get a new IP address and 9/10 times the site will resolve for me. I assume they are using different DNS servers for each IP address??

Well no matter what it has made my life easier and in some cases we look like hero's to our customers when they are moving from one host to us and it instantly updates like that

I am so glad we have the Internet otherwise I would have to get a real job. hahaha

I agree.. I hate SBC but I have two choices where I live.. Dial up or SBC DSL. Actually the first two years I was living (2 miles from nowhere) all I could get was Dial-up but stupid me I opted to have a 128k ISDN cut right through my year at $200/month. After the 2 year contract I was able to get SBC, it took me that long to convince them I was only 13000 feet from the switch..

Now I am on a one year contract with them but a new company is now out where I am offering some type of Wireless broadband and from what I have heard it is pretty fast and I am only about 5 miles from the tower so that will be the new direction soon enough.

by the way... my experience with propagation has been the same... it depends on the registrar... lately i've seen it take as little as 2 hours... i like that!!!
