Domain recognizability

We all know about keyword popularity of domains which is usually determined by their daily or monthly search volume, and we also know about domain brandability which usually depends on how unique, memorable, and attractive the domain is, but it seems like there might be a whole class of domains that don’t have any significant search volume associated with them, and they might not be suitable as a brand (perhaps being too long or being too generic), but they are easily recognized by people once they see them on the search engine results (or on somebody’s business card). Keyword popularity and keyword brandability are usually the most important factors in finding good domains, but if a domain can catch people’s attention on the search engine results simply because they recognize it and find it to be relevant to what they are searching for then why should it really matter if the keywords for that domain don’t have a great number of exact searches.

NewYorkCityRE.com is an example of one of my domains that doesn’t have a significant search volume as it is and perhaps might be a little too long and too generic to be used as a brand, but IF it showed up on the first few pages of the search engine results under Real Estate, Homes, or Property in New York City do you think that people are going to click on it just because of its recognizability.

when people click on a link, they typically do so, because they either know, expect or hope that the link will connect them to information relating to their search.

your domain is no more "recognizable" than any other domain, it will be more "relative" to a searchers query, if they are seeking info about new york real estate.

however, if they are searching for "fountain pens" and that domain came up....it would seem out of place.

imo...

Perhaps I should have indicated “recognizability” of the keywords within a certain industry (or category) which in the case of my domain NewYorkCityRE.com would be real estate.

if i wanted to play dumb, i could imagine that RE stands for "retired electricians" or "rat explosion" :)

but that depends on how many people associate the letters "RE" with realestate, and if the Search Engine "capitalizes the "re" at the end of the domain in the link.

as is, it shows as 'newyorkcityre.com' in the results, so you have to depend on visitors reading your description.

RE is well known amongst realtors to stand for real estate and most other people who are active in the real estate market are also familiar with it because of some of the famous real estate companies that use this abbreviation in their name (such as ReMax). Also all the City+RE.com domains for the top two hundred Cities in the US are already taken and many of them are being used by real estate agents in different Cities.

Anyways this post wasn’t meant to be about my domain only, I just used NewYorkCityRE.com as an example to discuss a certain class of domains that might catch people’s attention and not necessarily be a brand or have a great search volume.

But the problem is buyers and sellers are the best visitors for a real estate site (unless the site serves Realtors), probably not Realtor visitors.

I doubt if much of the public would recongize RE as meaning real estate as a stand alone term, especially lower case

RE by itself might have many different meanings, but it was my understanding that most people associated City+RE to real estate in that City.

Thanks for everyone’s replies, but as I already mentioned before I did not mean for this thread to become all about one specific domain, but rather I was interested to know if there was a certain class (or category) of domains that might get noticed by people (hence getting some clicks) even without being a famous brand or having great search volume.

I think the description is more important as to whether or not someone will click on yours as opposed to another, assuming your site was next to others in the same results of a search, as long as the name isn't obviously a spam / mfa site, like ny-re-al-est-ate.nl or something similar.
