Ok guys, so I've got a question. We all love the domain tasting feature, but what do you guys look for, before cutting bait and run? Do you need to see that it gets:

A - Minimum 1 visitor per day, roll the dice that the clicks will come.

B - Minimum of 1 click regardless of traffic, roll the dice that RPC will earn you enough to pay for the domain.

C - Must earn 8 cents minimum in first 4 days, to meet a 4 day average for what would take to pay for itself in a year?

D - I don't wait 4 days. I only wait 24 hours, if I dont see traffic or clicks in that 24 hours, I throw the domain back. Waiting 96 hours is for wimps!

So which is it guys? Which one of the above are you, or have I missed an option. Taking somewhat of an informal survey.

Some of mine tasted like crap the last year. Luckily I spit them out this time around before tasting them for another year.

Hardy Har har, this was meant to be a serious thread. Can we take the jokes elsewhere, and get some serious replies to what here on dnforum is referred to domain tasting.

great question - i've wondered the same as i know i've picked up names that are extremely profitable right after being tasted 3 or 4 times off the drop. obviously the big guys use automated methods that certainly let names slip through the cracks.

Exactly. For instance, I was watching refurbishedcaraudio.com for awhile now. Saw wan-fu or domain doorman or one of those other huge automated outfits had it and was tasting it. Waited a couple of days and checked it, it was dropped.

Regged it and so far this month has made over $17 so it's definately made it's regfee for the year already.

How do you tell they have been dropped several times?

If checking via domaintools, if it's available, it'll show this next to the Domain Status: Deleted And Available Again.

Or you can check it's history and see who has owned it previously.

Ok, but using that 1st four day window, when you can delete them and get a credit, how do you decide to keep them or not? Of course if they make you 50 cents a day, or $2 in 4 days, as in devil dogs domain refrenced above, you'd keep it. What I'm asking though, is in that 4 day window, what do you look for, that tells you to keep or delete?

A - Minimum 1 visitor per day, roll the dice that the clicks will come.

B - Minimum of 1 click regardless of traffic, roll the dice that RPC will earn you enough to pay for the domain.

C - Must earn 8 cents minimum in first 4 days, to meet a 4 day average for what would take to pay for itself in a year?

dnjackal, tasting isnt as easy as a 4 step checklist.

It all depends on the name, the keywords, the visitors, and the revenue.

Keep in mind that hasuidhenj665.com could very well receive 5 visitors a day, but the traffic may never be able to convert to clicks because you have no idea what your visitors are searching for.

It's hard to determine deleting or keeping. As many have said within the past few years... If the domain name makes above reg-fee, it should be a keeper.

However, I've found that if it makes only reg-fee per year, and the domain name holds no value other then the revenue it generates, it isnt worth reinvesting your reg-fee if you wait a year just to get that back.

I look at revenue as means of renewing premium domain names for free. If the domain name has good keywords, and you feel as if you can sell it aside from the $6.95 revenue it generates per year; its worth holding onto as its an asset that pays for itself.

All situations are different, and everyone has their own ways of doing things. Personally I have found that domain names that receive a few clicks a day, that dont convert to anything but $6.95 or less per year, that dont have any value aside of its revenue; to be a waste of time, energy and money that could be invested in something else with a better ROI. If you are presenting your portfolio to a potential buyer, a domain name that has no significant keywords, with little to no revenue and traffic only serves as an eye sore. Unless you have plans to develope, the domain name should make atleast $6.95 if not more average per year.

If the domain name has good keywords, a good amount of google results, or high overture keywords, and the domain name makes anything, you have to determine yourself what that domain name is worth to you. If it makes $1.00 per year, the following year you may either look at that $1.00 as a discount on your renewal, or a waste of time.

It all comes down to your intention of why you are registering the domain name.

Are you registering purely based on revenue potential?
Are you hoping for a quick flip?
or are you registering for a secure investment in hopes for a better return a lot further down the road?

Again, everyone has their own ways of doing things... I have Personally found the above methods to work the best.

Andrew

If I register a good generic dotcom that gets even two visitors in the first 4 days I will keep it unless there is some other negative factor involved. My thinking is that with 182 visitors per year I have a good chance at some profit and even if it doesn't work out I should be able to get my investment back.

I would keep a domain if it makes me 7 cents a day or 28 cents in four days.
7*365=$25 per year.

But if the domain is a domain that you picked up just after expiration, i would keep it only if it makes me 2-3$ in the first 4 days.Else let it go...

If domain makes $1 in all 4 days. Its gold :)

i'd probably see if domain has daily uniques. If it has any visitor 3 day of 4 i'd keep it.

Coz i think it mean you have a visitor now make him click on your ads :) it can be hard but if you ask hard (good design and relevant context) it may worl for you.
