Do all domains that go on-hold drop if not renewed?

I have noticed countless domains that go on-hold with an expiration date of something 2004.

Or do some domains just stay on-hold indefinitely?

I was just wondering because I did not know if it would be safe to put a snap on some of them or not. I did not want to put a snap on a name if it was going to expire in over 3 months.

Don't registrars add a year to such domains in order to recover their costs or something like that?
Don't think it affects the drop likelihood.
Of course "On-Hold" doesn't have to mean that expiry is due, may be some dispute etc.

Yeah, that is what I was kind of afraid of.

I wish they could differentiate the two until the expired ones hit the redemption period.

I have had my eyes on a few names that have been on hold since october-novemeber of last year at network solutions..both of them moved to the unpaid names department, so if you see that and its at netsol it could be a while.

Also, if they are at Signature Domains don't even waste your time. They are notorious for renewing domains that expired long time ago and parking them at the ppc parking page.

Not sure if either case applies, but just letting you know your not alone that some names don't drop like they should.
