Don't buy a domain past the expired date or you'll lose a year!

With almost 10,000 domains I've done a lot of buying, selling, and transferring, but this was NEWS to me; never saw it before.

I recently bought 2 names here that were past expiration date, but the seller agreed to renew names sold before transfer, which he did. When I tranferred to eNom, I noticed the expire date did not change. Here is tech support's official statement from their FAQ:

Why wasn't an extra year added to my domain's registration period when I
transferred it to eNom?
If a domain is renewed and then transferred within the first 45 days after the expiration date, an additional year will not be added to the domain's expiration date. This is a registry restriction and applies to all registrars.

If a domain is transferred to eNom within the registry's auto-renew period (that first 45 days after you renew the expired domain) as the gaining registrar, eNom is charged for the transfer by the registry, thus we cannot issue refunds for domains that are transferred to eNom.

I didn't -- another person was selling names that were past expiration, with the agreement he would renew it before transfer, which he did. I see lots of those types of sales here.

Which extensions and registry does this apply to? Also, why the hell is there NOT an additional year added if a transfer fee is paid to the gaining registrar? What would the renewal date have to do with it?

Same thing happen to me
I bought one name while a go and transfer it to enom
It's not even expired yet, but I asked the previous owner to renew it for another two years (as part of the deal) before the transfer
so the policy apply not only for name that already expired
it goes for all names that's been renewed within 45 days
when you transfer it to another registrar (enom), it won't add another year

Yeah, it stinks on ice. Lets see if anyone can get us an official statement from whatever registry and/or registrar as to why such a policy is in place.
