brand-aware

That is a very good way to put the entire gTLD concept. Yes, it is brand awareness.

Now, several startups can create their brand choosing the right name to the left AND right of the dot.

The lightning bolt to all who can not or will not grasp this new gTLD concept will be when ICANN releases the (global).brand. Presently there are over 700 TM FORTUNE 500 (or so) TLD's in holding. When the consumer starts recognizing, WOW! That Coke commercial is asking me to go to DIET.COKE for more information. The consumer will have complete confidence and trust in such a URL because we all (should) know that the brand domains will be a CLOSED system. No one (including the domain guru;s) will be able to own or register such a name extension.

This does not mean, indicate, or imply that Coke is rebranding itself. This means that Coke is using their name as the method to access their site, their products, their brand. Will the .com go away? Not a chance. Both will coexist. Both will be used. Both will be visited.

It will be a win/win for both Coke and the consumer.
