Here are some questions I need to ask about selling domain names - I've made one sale on Sedo, but it was all handled by the Sedo rep. I want to find out what if any expenses are incurred by a seller who is personally handling a sale from GoDaddy:

(1) When you see the term 'free push to GoDaddy,' does this simply mean that because the name is registered at GoDaddy it will therefore cost nothing to transfer to another GoDaddy account?

(2) Does it cost anything to push from GoDaddy to a different registrar (assuming that the name is outside the 60-day limit and this is allowable)?

(3) My domains are locked. Do you push the locked domain, or do you have to get it unlocked first? If so, how is this done?

(4) If a domain is within the 60-day renewal notice period, does the seller have to renew the domain before pushing it, or is this something that is the responsibility of the new owner?

Thanks in anticipation of any replies!

When you don't know, go to the source, your registrar support desk. Don't assume others will know the latest policies of your registrar.

"Push" means the registrar will move the domain between accounts without charging any fees.

You can't "push" from one registrar to another, that is called "transferring" and will incur the receiving registrar's standard renewal fee.

The purpose of locking a domain is to absolutely prevent it from being transferred. You need to be more familiar with your registrar & domains so you will know how to manage your inventory. Try reading the documentation your registrar provides for you. Or just send a note to their support department asking the same questions.

(4) Depends on the registrar. Some don't allow a transfer within a certain period of time before the renewal date. Keep in mind that the act of renewing or updating the contact information could be enough to trigger the 60-day temporary lock against transferring the domain away from the registrar.

Thank you, Austin. I feel suitably chastised now, and will go to GoDaddy for any further information. :(

Normally you will have to unlock the domain name before it can be pushed, but it varies by registrar.

Thanks, Rockefeller. Presumably this is something you have to apply to the registrar to do?

It should be under the control panel under "domain lock."

Thanks again, Rockefeller. :)

Reply:

(1) Correct. Pushing to another GD account costs nothing because the transaction is within the same registrar.

(2) Yes, there is a transfer cost to move names to another registrar...normally this cost is the registrar's Reg Fee.

(3) Depends on the Registrar, like Rockfeller indicated above.

(4) It's between the 2 parties to negotiate. There are no rules indicating that the seller has to pay for renewal fee before the push.

Hopes this helps ya.

Yes, that's very helpful, DomainName. When the new registrar has been paid the fee, is the name renewed for the following year, or does the amount payable just happen to equal the reg fee, with no renewal?

Oh now you are just being silly and you didn't seem to bother reading past the first sentence.

Always refer to your registrar as the ultimate source when you have issues or questions about your domains & transfers. The forums are great for finding alternative solutions or discovering quirks in the procedures of each registrar.

Thanks, Austin. I don't think I was being silly. I did read the whole post, but sometimes the impression of the opening sentence lingers. :)

A site like GoDaddy can be quite difficult to negotiate and use to find the info you need, and when you email them it takes a while to get a response. Also, somehow with a forum you get the feeling you're speaking to real people, and a question-and-response interchange goes some way towards cementing forum relations.
