I'm a big boxing fan. I know about getting ripped off. It seems to me that the domain business has many parallels to the sport.

1. Money is what governs both industries. There is no fair play or morality involved.
2. Completly unethical transactions are conducted in broad daylight and no one says a thing. Conflicts of interest are the norm.
3. The organizations that were formed to protect and govern the "fighters" (that would be the registrants and domainers like us) are making questionable practices. Unlike major sports such as football or baseball or professional industries such as the stock market or real-estate our governing bodies are putting personal profits and gains for the "hear and now" over the long term well being of the industry.

I could go on and on and on and probably will but i'm out of time for now.

With several of the top Registrars auctioning off their own inventory of dropping domains, it seems like we are revisiting the days of the domain "WILD WILD WEST" all over again.

Kind of exciting in that only the more informed will be able to stay on top of this mess!

I have really begun to worry about the morality of registrars in general. This move by Go Daddy is ridiculous. First, they have made no general announcement on their site, in the 'my account' page, or even on the 'Investor's Edge' drop search page. They should honor all existing backorders first until they do this. They should then quit taking backorders for Go Daddy names, period, and refer you to the auction page for more info. Personally, I have bought many drop positions, many before this system was known at all, with the idea that Go Daddy would honor my domain name backorder per the rules that, to the best of my knowledge are on their main site now. Once a real annoucement is made, then things should change. I do have to question putting unexpired domains and domains that are still within the regular no penalty grace period (here to fore 40 days at go Daddy; changing now??). Only when they go to pending delete should there be any attempt to sell them and they should not require a full payment until they can definitely deliver the goods.

It is further difficult to understand, other than when greed is put in the picture, why ICANN now gives the rights to expired domains to the registrar. Provided that I paid for the last registration year properly the name should simply delete. I have defaulted on nothing and the registrar is, quite simply, due nothing! The name should simply be thrown to the wind, probably in a truly random manner to allow reregistration by whoever is first to see it listed as 'available'. Drops should not even have a regular rythem but we digress.

To be clear, this isn't like a tax default where the government may have the right to sell my house for tax default. Even then, they whould be required to give me any funds obtained above the tax costs and the auctioneer's fees. Should they get a $1,000 for a domain that I let expire, they should be sending me, maybe, $700 after the cost of the sale is taken into account. This is every bit as logical as the registrar being allowed to sell expired domains in the first place, in reverse, of course, in any event.

Funny cuz in a thread I was saying the exact same thing. After thinking about the drop business in general I realized that these companies are making a fortune. It's a serious problem. There has to be ICANN regulation on this kind of crap. I know that many of you make money on drops but the fact that registrars are making this money without any monetary risk is messed up. If a name is dropped...it should go into an icaan pool where it should be eventually (60 days?) be released to ICANN certified drop agencies. Then it can be auctioned off. This crap of the let anyone just catch it and profit sucks banannas.

It seems to me that it is more of a game now. Having to figure out where it was last registered, so you know where to back order it. I was able to get a great domain that I had been after for over a year because I knew that it was registered with Godaddy, and they scoop their own domains before they are dropped. That said, I am kind of worried about their new Domain Name Aftermarket. Throws a real wrench in the works.

I say "NO Daddy!" and a long time ago moved all my domains away from them. I pointed out the illustrious president's antics - the latest being the fake morality issues while GD had a "tits and ass" Superbowl commercial.

Good post. I started out there and now have 95% of my domains at Moniker.

Some time back (maybe 2002)
I lost control of all my domains (most were hosting customers) for several weeks, they updated their database and place my domains in various accts.Godaddy would only give me back access after I filed a complaint with ICANN.
Godaddy = A shady company

I still have a few domains with godaddy as this is just part of doing business,it cannot be help, but any really important name, I move to another register ...

I believe the great database fiasco was in the summer of 2003.

well, anyway its just not a good place to do business, but I will still have acct there.

If they hold the domains for 70 days (or whatever) seems to me like they would milk all the taffic if any, out of the domains themselves...

Well, actually this is really no different from most other registrars.

Godaddy allow up to 30 or 40 days after renewal during which time you can still renew your domain at the normal price. As you haven't paid money until you renew, I think they are entitled to any income during that time. I think they would probably only be able to get traffic for the remaining 30 or so days if they actually pay their $6 to the central registry, and there again, that's fair enough.

In fact, I think they don't switch DNS until several days after renewal date, whereas some (such as enom.com, I think) switch the DNS to their own PPC on the actual day of expiry or following day.

Any normal domain has to wait 60 to 70 days after renewal date before it drops anyway - the 30ish grace period given by the registrar plus the 30 days RGP plus the 6 days pending delete period.

Oh yes, I remember that fiasco too. For some reason that I am still unsure of, they automatically allocated me several different user ids and it was a real muddle. I'm still not too sure if I lost any names due to that!

As a result of their database changes, my first name is now "MR" as far as they are concerned, and I daren't risk trying to change it.

Has anyone who bought an expired domain got it transfered to their account?

Hi. Yes, I've had two or three transferred to my account before they started the auction system and I've had one or two transferred under the auction system. (I had one transferred about three days ago)
