Bob Parsons has done it again!?!

I have in the past waited about 20 days after the expiration date on any of my domain names parked at GoDaddy because, after all, their grace period had always been anywhere from 30 to 40 days! Well take a look at this shit that I rec. today:

Hi William,

We have changed our grace period since 8/2/2005 to 19 days from 30 days. The grace period is subject to change at Godaddy.com discretion and varied depend [sic] on the domain. We recommend our customers to renew their domains before they are expired. You can bid on those domains that already expired by backordering them. We can also redeemp [sic] these domains for $80.00 each. Please let me know if you would like to redeemp [sic] or backorder these domains and I can proccess [sic] that for you.

Have a beautiful day :-)

No previous announcements, no emails, no nothing! We're finally through!

To be fair, registrar level "grace" periods are seldom (if at all) officially published. Compare it to the random deletion cycle (if it could be called a cycle at all) of the former, monopolistic Network Solutions, which ranged from days to months or even years, I have little to complain. But yes, when you renew your domains AFTER expiry (which I too sometimes do), there is always the risk.

William,

I'm in the same boat as you :-(

I've "lost" 6 domains due to relying on a 30 day grace period. Fortunately nothing very valuable.

I also got the redeemp spelling and was wished a beautiful day. Maybe I have the same account executive.

LOL! People these days can't even spell correctly. I came across an "executive assistant" the other day who misspelled "accept" as "except", not in a casual e-mail but an official, published document. ;p

That's the guy.

Didn't like to mention his name, but had thought of putting some semi-cryptic pointer to the name.

$80 is cheap compared to $160 Enom charges and $250 for Powerpipe.

That said, GD sucks b*llocks.

Not to be dense here, but shouldn't you just renew them before they expire? If you're trying to squeeze out "free" time, you can't hold GoDaddy accountable for that.

Have to agree with you up to a point. But then you must agree with me that these GoDaddy "changes," "updates," etc. are made arbitrarily, without notice or mention of any kind to current or potential customers and that, in this specific example, they do in fact possibly lead to more sales--and potentially more money than just renewal fees!--on their tdnam.com site. All of my domains were (had to redeem one yes. and buy another one at tdnam yes!) immediately listed for auction at tdnam!

I think they have that "free time" thing figured out already, so actually you lose those days by waiting, they back you up to your expiration date and you get your one year from then, so if they take your name offline on the day it expires and you wait 20 days to renew, those 20 days you still pay for. I understand that they do not always take you offline immediately but they are doing it more and more these days.

Well just a thought, I get caught in the same boat sometimes, well have a great day to all my fellow domainers,

I used the grace period when I needed a bit of extra leeway with my cashflow.

I know it involves an element of risk.

However, it would have been courteous of Godaddy.com to have warned us of the change too.

Exactly!

Before I go on a tear with a new post regarding more GoDaddy shannigans, would any of you fellow domainers reading this post do me a favor and go to the tdnam.com site and look for the most absolutely worthless name you can find and then go to godaddy and do a whois. Was it backordered? If my suspicions are correct, EVERY SINGLE DOMAIN NAME LISTED ON TDNAM.COM IS BACKORDERED! What this would mean then is that if you find a name you like, you cannot backorder it--YOU HAVE TO BID FOR IT!

I suspect that's because they make you backorder domains before they expire. So if they're on TDNAM they've already gone past the point you can backorder.

My apologies to her.

I'm on the phone right now with GoDaddy and the people in that dept. are saying "Sky" is a "he"! Now this is truly bizarre!
A person calling herself (To all my sensibilities at the time, I was listening to the voice of a young woman!) "Sky" once left a voice message for me. I immediately returned the call using the direct number that had been provided. The voice mail introductory message I listened to then was definitely by the same person! So I left my message and never heard from her/he/? again!

Maybe Parsons is hiring the "'sexual identity' challenged"!? LOL
