If the Smithsonian can't be bothered to register a "si.museum" domain, what does this mean for the boatload of new top-level domains due at the end of 2012?

Hundreds of thousands of dollars to register and maintain a gtld -Sounds like a headache to boot

And in this depressionary economy - this is sure to be a failed business plan for most gtlds

I wonder if this means we'll see .web soon? If .web came out at a .com level registration price it would be a long term game changer in my opinion. I'll catch flack for saying that but so be it. As an abbreviation of "website" the extension would fully accommodate most niche/purpose specific website presences under one unified umbrella (commercial, information, network, organization, television, geo specific, etc), and it would do so without being a second rate English hack ccTLD like .co, .me, .tv, .cc, etc. Pure word play relevance minus any form of hack stigma or ccTLD based visitor confusion. The internet brand puritan's TLD dream.
