I've tried to bid on a few at Namewinner, but keep getting outbid. Is it better to place your bid in the last moments, or to just bid a silly high amount?
You have to establish your personal limit for any one domain. Don't over committ resources, because failure to pay is treated quite harshly. With the introduction of auction extension, last minute bidding has fallen out of favor. Many people put in their proxy bid, and let the cards fall where they will. This is of course, a personal decision.
Good luck, petertdavis! Get out your checkbook, but always remember- the difference between what you pay for a domain and what you sell it for determines your profit or loss.
Thanks for the comments. Sometimes I'm wondering how people are making back their investment in a name, not to mention making a profit. I guess some people there must have a real talent for profiting on names.

I don't think they really spend that much... see my previously posted theory that the big players receive rebates or other incentives. Many car dealerships work this way... "we'll show you our invoice, we're only making $100". They don't mention that rabtes they get.
