I am continually amazed at how much some domain "Buyers"
bid up names on auction sites. I have been selling names for years now
but in the last year people have been bidding up even crappy names
way out of sight. I laugh as I think at all the money these people
are going to lose

Get a grip people!

Some people think that just because a name was registered before, it must have some value. I see it exactly the opposite: that a name was let expired, it's very likely that it has very little value (if any at all), so little that the owner is not willing to renew it for some $6! ;)

Domains expire for various reasons. Companies go bankrupt, registrants die, registrants get rich and don't care about their domains, etc.

I try to tell myself this but the fact of the matter is that with rising domain prices, rising demand, increased population, technological advances, and new advertising channels there is always going to be increasing value for domains no matter how "crappy" they may appear at the time to you. I look back at some names that i've dropped or registered last year and I have a totally different perspective on things than I did at the time (and yes most are picked up). Overall you have to look at the long term picture. I would say the best strategy is to focus on particular names rather than just buying random sites you will never develop or use (unless you are buying traffic names). Sometimes dropping a site is the best stategy if you do not have the time to track down a buyer or liquidate it on the forum because you're getting that much more into the hole for another year if the domain is not producing income at some point.

Yes, it appears auctions do make people a bit psychotic. Ordinary folks who would normally grumble if the price of beer goes up by $1 will like Mr. Hyde go crazy at auctions with very little sense of financial logic. The hope is always that one day, some day, somewhere, out there, a buyer will come along to give them $1m for their crap three word .com they paid 5 figures to acquire.

Mole,

Shame on you for ruining my dreams.

I thought $ xx,xxx. each for 3 word .com was a bargain.

Next thing you will tell me is that there is no Easter Bunny.

Which, will make my EasterEgg.us worthless. :'(

And, that is my best domain.

It is my nest egg for my future retirement. :-D

two months ago i caught a domain of a bankrupt company. then they approach me to buy back the domain. then they liquidate their company + domain to the new owner. it is not online business. domain is just to show the presence of their company.

Leave those buyers alone and let them bid it up, I set my price for every dropping domain I want, if it goes over I do not chase it, there is better ways to get domains now then at auctions.

Yeah people do bid domains that go to auction up far too much.. Its cheaper to buy direct from third parties.

Sad, because some of the names on the auctions are pretty sweet. Sure i still buy names there.. but some skyrocket way too quickly.

IMO the high prices are is mostly due to all the adrenaline, competition and will to win associated with an auction environment.

That's a big reason I rarely participate in the auctions.

Yeah its true it can be deadly.. but also i guess it all depends on the name.. sometimes they are actually worth what they end up going for even with all the adrenaline and everything else fuelling silly bidding.

Just means you dont end up with the bargain you had hoped for.. but it doesnt always mean its not worth it :)
