Does anyone know if two or more parties want a new TLD (lets call it iTLD for independent of ICANN) what will happen? First come first serve? Auction?

If it's first come first serve real estate next to ICANN's offices will go up in value :)

They are going to auction them apparently.

do we have definitive cost of a TLD (that isnt auctioned)? some are saying 50k, others are saying 100k? is there an ICAAN statement on how much it will cost?

"For an application fee of around $50k-$100K, plus proof of technical ability to manage the DNS servers, companies can start carving up their domain real estate space on the internet."

Does this mean for this amount you:

Get your TLD or pay $0....

OR

You pay that to just apply....

There is a world of difference there.

Q: How do big players unload their inventory without further pushing the market downwards?

A: By making people believe that the market will not be falling?

Q: But most sensible persons can tell the market is going to change FOR SURE!?

A: Most people are not sensible; and they choose to waste time bashing the government or whatever, instead of seriously adjusting their investment strategy, before it's too late.

Q: Hmm ... you are not talking about domain names, are you?

A: No, no. Definitely not. LOL!

if you want to unload anything good, please pm me.......

is the .com market going to plummet like it did after .info, .biz and (my all-time favorite) .mobi came out?

or perhaps like .ws or .cc?

go and ask the average person on the street if they actually know what a .mobi is.... or a .cc for that matter.

remember those TLDS have been in the market for some time. then try to explain to them ".pizza"....... see how that works out for you.

Why is it acceptable for there to exist a Cartel in domain extensions, but unacceptable for the Arabs to charge $140 a barrel?

This is just another of those Freedom of Speech things where you can say what you want, just as long as it is not anti-establishment.

Looking forward to some changes in the domain market at last nice one Icann

The thread asks this question:
Interesting? How will this affect current dot com and other TLD values? Will all usable names be deemed worthless or will they have much higher values?

This news just put the brakes on my buying .com .net .org domains. If others think like me...demand will drop forcing prices down just like real estate! This is bar none the worst news to hit the domaining industry. As if it wasn't bad enough that parked revenues have dropped by 60% now this!!!

Simple supply and demand economics.

If your sitting on a ton of domains I would be worried...in my opinion.

Your spin may be what you want to hear!

Read the thread again.

get ready for a mad rush to quality .com domains. the more TLDs there are the more valuable .com's will become. hang tight.

If you had actually been following the policy development over the last three years, you would now that that a prefix of "i" is almost universally understood to mean Internationalized. So basically that terminology means Internationalised TLD or in otherwords IDN.IDN.

The reason that you are all now running around like headless chickens is because you have not been following the plot. There have been several rounds of public consultation on this and the policy has been formulated broadly within the ICANN constituencies.

The chances of turning this around on a six-pence and changing the course of history are slim at best, and much thinner with such a rag-tag bag of rebels to contend with. Where were the ICA? Didn't here them speaking up against this.

ICANN is opening up the market to a fresh influx of domain extensions. Meaning there will be freedom to register possibly any extension you choose as long as it doesn't affect another person's trademark

Will this work? how will it affect domainers?

so all of the domains we got are completely useless? even .coms!? I saw that

mac.com going to be mac.mac mac.apple

im gonna get ".macapple"

Domainers aren't going to get even close to these extensions. Most would fail the financial criteria, of those that would pass that we are probably generally talking the least technically competent, and when it comes to demonstrating legitimate purpose that would be in the interests of the internet community as a whole, frankly they wouldn't stand an earthly. The best keywords would have competing claims that will take years to resolve and the final outcome will be no doubt be decided by auction. I guess that means Verisign would probably end up with the lion's share.

Ha, I agree but hey, its not like everyone has to buy tld's to get to work everyday.

pesonally i see this development as a waste of everybody's time, the only people who will benefit from it are the registration bodies.

.com .net .org will forever be king, opening up for as many silly extensions as possible won't help the market grow, it will definitely drive down value

Well it is definitely not a waste of time in as much as it is introducing non-Latin characters which are in fact those which the majority of the World's populations languages are written in. But I do agree there is probably more than enough in terms of Latin extension kicking around. Having said that, if people want them, really you should have a good reason to deny them want they want. The fact that it might adversely affect your own speculative investments is probably not a strong enough reason to do that. Is this the end of dot com? Don't make me laugh, dot com can take on a thousand dot mobis and still come out on top!

It'll be a flop.

They will cost $100k+.

The good ones are going to get auctioned and no one will want the others...sort of like .mobi.
