Hi

I intend to start a town portal network very soon!

The portals will provide visitors with local information on, cars for sale, houses for sale, classified ads, local accommodation etc,

I would like honest opinions on the domain name I am considering using.

I never really see .info domain names at the top of search engines so am a little apprehensive to use the domains although the domains in my opinion are very relevant to the project.

SearchLocal.info
Search-Local.info

I intend to use sub domains of these e.g. London.SearchLocal.info or NewYork.SearchLocal.info

I also have SearchGlobal.info and Search-Global.info

Thanks for any advice or opinions

Best wishes
Ivaname

I suggest you get a .com. Stay away from hyphens. Spend money now to buy the domain you really want because it's going to matter in the end.

Thanks for that jh3

What do you make of localservices.net as in London.localservices.net?

Its on sale at afternic at $700

Thanks

I think, You should use .com, nothing else, if You develop something, then only .com

Well i must say i am struggling here!

I have searched afternic and buydomains.com with no luck

where can i get advice on selecting the best domain name for my business?

Thanks
Ivaname

Stick with .com for sure. Have you tried emailing the owners of the domains you want? Also did you try sedo.co.uk? If you like localservices.com, email that person. If you want options, open up a thread in the domain wanted section with what you are looking for. You will get a lot of crap submitted but you may also find what you are looking for.

Agreed, no reason to use search.info if you can get localsearchandservices.com

lol, whatever you do don't use localsearchandservices.com. And never use a .info.

Thankfully search.info is reserved by afilias so at least there's no chance of anyone wasting their time developing that one.

Thanks for your input peeps

I have found a .com now

whatevertowncrier.com

e.g. Manchestertowncrier.com

In the UK a town crier is a person who makes public announcements.

Is there such a thing in the USA.

why is everyone so against .info?

Thanks
Ivaname

Nonsense, .Info is just fine for what you are looking to do.

Listen THIS is the bottom line.. lets say you were to get "searchlocal.com" .. so what.. it will get ZERO traffic, nada, nothing ,no one..

Searchlocal.info is just as good..because BOTH names ..no matter which one you get still has to be optimized for the search engines and get links to rank. The search engins could care less about your extension..just your ability to get links .

Personally I would look for a.US for what you are trying to do (that is of course you are loooking at a portal for US markets.)

The reason you see people "against" .info or any other extension is because their portfolios are full of .com's.. simple as that.

SearchLocal.info
WORKS..
as you plan to develop an "info" search site.. it's not necessarily a commercial site.. but rather an INFO site..

.INFO works here for the ideas you have in mind.

and getting a .info in the engines is an EQUAL challenge as any .com owner.

Goodluck!

I'd like to develop search.info. :D

Even there's stick to .COM rules, there's always an exception. :D

Thanks all for your help

It's interesting to see that this is not an exact science and people have such differences of opinion

I think Branding SearchLocal.info would be easier that anything else I can come up with.

Maybe a possibility that it will become well known. I know at the moment it is difficult to get local results from the search engines.

Funny old game,

Best wishes

I'm a new tld supporter. I think the gtld .info, (and cc .us) is great.

However, go for the .com for now. If its long and silly like some of the examples, go for a shorter .com if you can.

If you want to be a hero, go for that too. But use a decent .com as a base.

And then waste them!
