can you actually do it? Can some names actually escape tasters and get into your hands and have actual traffic on them? Or do tasters suck names completely dry?

Tasters are "blind" when it comes to domain tasting. What I mean by that is most use software to look for available domains which they purchase first to find out of a domain has traffic. I, on the other hand use data mining (which is what you should learn) to find domains that actually have some sort of traffic value before I register. I haven't find any with massive amounts of traffic yet (I buy mine mainly for development) but they are still out there. I do a lot of manual digging, which a lot of tasters don't do. So yes, they are still out there but the window of opportunity is closing.

Likewise as meganerd, I've picked some up after patiently waiting for the tasters to drop them that have pretty decent traffic.

Now by pretty decent traffic, I mean a few hits and clicks a day. If it can make $5-10 a month, then it has paid for itself in the first month and I'm happy.

hmm..
thanks for the input guys. much appreciated!

Yes and it's quite possible:
1. either build scripts and process, check large amounts of keywords, data and domains, or
2. think out of the box, look for new stuff popping up etc

Beyond a doubt. Hand regging still can bring decent traffic. Even without ever having been tasted.

OcracokeBeach.com.

Pay attention to the news, look at what is popular, just be patient.

Ocracoke Island was the number one rated beach in the US. This was the first time that a beach other than one in FL or Hawaii had won such an honor (it is in NC). OcracokeIsland.com was already regged. OcracokeBeach.com was not.

Great traffic followed and was making between $25-$65 per month. Naturally it will die down during the off season and the cold. But the amount of money it has made in only about 3 months time was clearly worth the $6.95 reg fee.

So, hand regged, no previous tasting, and traffic came to it.

look for new stuff popping up etc

That's an "ah ha!" moment for me! Thanks!

Trends, news and events will also take place, change, evolve, etc. We don't know what trends, products, popularity will be like in ten years. Saying that, there will ALWAYS be something valuable register. ALWAYS!! :D So I take it back when I said the window is closing. There is no window, just a big hole of opportunity!!

You can definitely hand reg great names:

Stats from 3 names I hand regged last week (8 days ago actually):

Uniques Clicks RPM CTR RPC Total

<table class="data_table" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" width="100%"><tbody><tr class="alter2"><td align="center" valign="middle">15</td> <td align="center" valign="middle">9</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">$1,190.67</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">60.00%</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">$1.98</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">$17.86</td></tr></tbody></table><table class="data_table" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" width="100%"><tbody><tr class="alter2"><td align="center" valign="middle">29</td> <td align="center" valign="middle">5</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">$185.17</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">17.24%</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">$1.07</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">$5.37</td> <td align="center" valign="middle" width="40">
</td></tr></tbody></table><table class="data_table" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" width="100%"><tbody><tr class="alter2"><td align="center" valign="middle">39</td> <td align="center" valign="middle">8</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">$99.49</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">20.51%</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">$0.49</td> <td align="right" valign="middle">$3.88</td></tr></tbody></table>
The middle one even showed as dropped 5 times - other two were brand new.

Some of my best names ever were hand reg...look for sites that are KNOWN traffic domains and build off of them, even if they get 5% of the traffic of the "real one" they are worth it 9 times out of 10..go after the high dollar clicks, forget the movie domains and social networking stuff..focus on bank, finance, loan, insurance, medical, automotive, law, etc

thanks for the great info and encouragement again guys.
you rock!

I suggest using moniker as it only costs you .25 to delete the domain if it gets no traffic in the first few days during the trial registration period (tasting)

I'll give them a shot.
Thanks.

thats all i do is hand reg ,the process is slower but it it only takes a few to finance many purchases

Hi, Gawnd,

Would you mind sharing more information on your had reg strategy? Your results are great!
