.edu is open to educational institutions only and you'll have to file lot's of paperwork to get an .edu domain.

No, .edu domains you must be an accredited post-secondary institution to get. I can think of at least one person who fraudulently applied for and got one -- they then bragged about it somewhere they shouldn't have (lots of technical people around), someone reported them, and the lost the domain... oops.

If Pool gets the pending delete list from VeriSign, then it will include edu domains. Pool must not be removing edu domains from the list.
