It is luck for a lot of people in this business. The "rounders" who are making a living at it however know that if you make the right decisions and spend the necessary time with it, luck can still be there, but will be icing on the cake instead.

Well to be more concise, selling domains depend on the force of your marketing input. The more, the better.

If you're not a broker, then selling domains succesfully highly depends on buying domains sucessfully.

It depends on the domain quality. If domain business will be build on luck no one will ever want one character .com, net, org domains, and look now......
But i can say what the peoples who selling and buying domains are so much what in 2 or 3 years this business not be attractive . All the days i getting so much low bowl offers so i sometimes thinking what in this business to much bunny hoppers who thinking to buy 10 times lower market price. Its even not a now days price :D

But the domainers who able to get that kind of domains from current owners who selling at that price is Masters. More domainers, lower earnings from sales. :)
This is my theory about all the luck.

The 2. Nd factor is connections. If you know something from godaddy or networksolutions you will take at that price. The deal usually are legal.
And this is real factor, because someone who living in village and have 500 usd for domaining never own something who will sell lets say for million.

Thats the real facts about domaining.

Making money with domains has very little luck involved. Sure you might get a fluke sale here and there, but you can't build a business on those.

The key is knowing when an opportunity presents itself and taking advantage when it does.

I agree that it's more about exposure and timing than sheer luck.
Yet, there is a bit of luck involved. For example I have already sold domains, that were due to expire and probably not to be renewed, for good amounts.
I have also received very generous initial offers on Sedo, more than I would have expected for the domain.
Last but not least, I have also sold quite many domains that had been registered for years previously and obviously never sold.
The timing was good (the right buyer at the right place in the right moment) and the exposure may have helped. I think many possible buyers will walk away if you don't actively signal the name may be available for sale.

But you just can't rely on luck. Actually domaining is no rocket science and crystal ball glazing. If you understand what makes domains valuable you will naturally acquire domains that are coveted by other parties, and make sales. Many people will not stay in business long enough to complete the learning curve involved.

Any goods in the market has standard prices +-, if you want to trade the cars there is astandard price for it +-, realestate, clothing, jewelry...etc , but in domain name I think there is no standered prices , Luck involved in selling the domains, for examp. is there a standard prices for c.com or cc.com or nn.com or nnn.com ...? you can find nnn.com sold for $200 and other one sold for 1k. , here is the luck I am talking about.
