I like jets.com a lot more than dolphins.com :). There are plently of potential buyers for jets.com, but few buyers willing to pay top dollar for dolphins.com (IMHO).

The asking price for jets.com by the previous owner was apparently $85,000. He seemed pretty firm about this.
Check this link out:

Then click on "Buy It Now". The owner knew that it was worth something.

So, my guess is that Greg paid quite a bit for this name, probably mid five figures. If so, was jets.com a good pickup? I think so, although ~ $50k is an awful lot of money...

P.S.
The asking price for dolphins.com was $25,000:

Wow, call me a newbie morel, but I like the way clicking on the 'Buy it Now' button for each of those domain names takes you to an Escrow.com start transaction page with the price etc. Very cool.

With the market in the doldrums now is the best time to buy domains - congrats Gregr.

overture stats:
239351 dolphin
77849 miami dolphin
33139 dolphin picture

nice :)

Jets, not as good....
46160 jet

Amazing purchase(s).

$35,000 - Jets.com
$28,000 - Dolphins.com

Columbo has nothing on you guys. :)

onyx, are you saying that those were the purchase prices for dolphins.com and jets.com? or those are your appraisal values?

I think those are stupid purchases, and you run the risk of having the respective football teams take each of the domains away from you. Even if they don't win, you will likely have to pay tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees to fight to keep them.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, good pickups.

:)

I disagree. As Bob pointed out, the football team already tried that and lost. A football team is just a business - they have no pre-ordained right to the use of a common dictionary word. If they did, Busch Gardens here in Tampa wouldn't be able to advertise their Dolphins Show. As long as the domain owner doesn't put up a site using the likeness of Miami Dolphins football players they have no say in the matter. Likewise, the New York Jets could not prevent a manuafacturer of jet airplanes from using jets.com.

Duke, don't you think it's a little ironic that you have to explain something as basic as this to someone whose username is "lawpal"?

3,616 accidental type-ins in Overture for dolphins.com, 1,137 for
jets.com!
Do you have stats, type-ins from the sites self? I am trying to find out relationship between those two stats.
Altough dolphins.com obviously have more traffic, I would say jets.com is not far behind in value, because of its high resale potential.
$50K+ each.

Yesterday Dolphins.com had 1,745 visitors and $326.59 in sales.

Jets.com had 908 visitors and $562.09 in sales.

Not a bad day. :)

Nothing sweeter than a domain that pays for itself! Once you pass the breakeven point it's a free money machine.

Thanks for the data.

Not exactly my business:D but are you talking about total sales
or your revenue?
I guess the first case is much more probable, which means about
$1500 a month from both sites.
How long will it take to break-even? :D

I think that it has already taken to break-even.
The values of both domains will not be obsolete :)

Wow! :)
But don't you think that linking to football affiliate programs will open the door to potential lawsuits?
