Yes, Jewish tradition bases their religion on the mother. You would have to go back every generation on the maternal side.

Would that make me a Goy, considering that my father was Jewish, and my mother was born into a Christian family and has been religiously indifferent most of her life?

As far as I know (read) if your father is Jewish but your mother wasnt and converts the rabbis will still not acknowledge you (child) as Jewish. Infact so much so you cant get into a private Jewish school.

I am just shocked at how many people I met lately who say they are Jewish yet their father is not, I never realized how many Jewish girls marry non Jews.

It also depends on which branch of Judaism you're talking about - Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist. They have different rules about who does or doesn't qualify as a Jew.

I suppose but apparently the majority lean toward mother.

Haverim,
this is crap.
If you remember the movie Cabaret, the young German pursuing the Jewess (during the Nazis) tells her:
Ich bin Jude.
A simple declaration by a decent person is all it takes.

Yes, the child must convert as well.

Yeah, Abu gosh/Ein karem are considered good places in area, though there's great resturants in jerusalem, like Mkneyuda(in mahne yuda, name is a play with the actual location name, if you know, open kitchen Resturant quite modern), and i like colony if you know it :D, and abu gosh has the Abu gosh resturant which has like best kebab in world, and every time im in area, i buy like 3kilo humus

Wow!! Just joined today, although have been domaining for six years. . Would loooooooooooove to have a meetup or a domainer conference in Israel.

Anyone interested in a meetup in Israel please PM me. Time for some serious Israeli style networking. And BTW - I am also a bizzly guy, and agree that bamba is for kids.

LET THERE BE PEACE.
