Just wondering (sorry probably cause I'm new) but what would having the .net as well have to do with the overall value of the .com?

.com's hold more value than .net's .. Its more important to hold the .com version of a domain rather than the .net version. Owning, both .com and .net doesn't really do anything for value. If someone owned the .net of a .com you have, they'll lose alot of the traffic to your .com anyway
