I need a little help here.

I'm moving one of my sites and am trying to do it as seamless as possible.

What is the best way to do this? I already have the site on the other webspace.

Is there any way to instantly change name servers?

Thanks,

BGray

 Yea, I do it all the time on eNom. You can use mydomain.com if your registrar sucks on this front.

I think that you have the site up on both servers from what you wrote
Can you change ns1 and wait until you are sure it propagates (a few days max) and then change ns2 - I believe this will considerably reduce the propagation time and limit the unavailable period.
This is what my server admin did recently when we had to change IP Addresses and it seemed to work well, not seamlessly but with only a very short downtime.

- upload full site to new server and ensure site/database etc are working ok
- then change dns to new server :)

Thanks everyone.

I've changed the dns settings and will just have to have a little downtime on the switch.

The site is www.sportscardforum.com so being a forum the db changes constantly. I have the forum on the other server turned off with a switching hosts message and I'll just have to move the most up to date db from the old host as soon as the switch is done.

:)

you could place a message on the old server for everyone to post in the temporary site location

this message will dissapear when the dns changes over and no longer points to the old site

ive always did this when changing hosts with my forums :)

What you can do (could have done) is:

1. Create duplicate site on new host (you did this)
2. Revise old site to include a message and a link to the new site. However, use the ip address of the new site in the link, not the domain name.
3. Disable db at old site (i.e. no more posts).
4. Then change nameservers to new site.

You will have zero down time with this method. You will have negligible loss of messages.
