Here, inspired by Tygerwoody's thread on what he does after purchasing a domain name, are the steps in my learning ladder from raw domaining beginner:

1 Register some domain names I like on GoDaddy<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
2 Put 'Make fortune from domain names' into Google search engine
3 Discover that most of my domain names may well be crap
4 Check out some forums suggested by web articles and join DNForum
5 Post in the newbie section trying to find out what parking is
6 Apply to have names accepted at a couple of parking companies
7 Have names rejected by parking companies
8 Apply to join Sedo, necessitating twenty emails between me and their customer service giving advice on how to do so
9 Post on DNForum to try to find out what DNS means
10 Try to change DNS of domain names on GoDaddy to point to Sedo
11 Discover that pointing doesn't mean there's an actual finger icon to click on
12 Post on DNForum to find out how to change DNS on GoDaddy
13 Get accepted by Sedo and finally manage (with the help of at least three DNForum members) to point the DNS to GoDaddy
14 Add domain names to Sedo
15 Post on DNForum to find out how to fit domain names into categories
16 Post on DNForum to find out how to choose keywords for domain names
17 Get offer of $300 for one of my domain names on Sedo
18 Accept and celebrate professional domaining status by taking husband to dinner
19 Sedo buyer defaults and is banned for his trouble – is this the start of the recession?
20 One of my domain names (a dotinfo) begins to make good money (about $1 a month)
21 Sell a domain name for around $150 – thankfully, buyer pays up this time
22 Celebrate renewed professional domaining status by taking husband for sandwich lunch at Starbucks
23 One of my domain names is getting around 1,000 unique visits a month but making no money whatsoever
24 Sell another domain name for around $60
25 Celebrate further proof of professional domaining status by buying husband a cappuccino
26 Kind DNForum member from another parking company offers to take some of my domains and give them a trial parking – no change, except that the 1,000 unique-visit-one earns a few cents
27 Go through my domain names working out how to develop them
28 Buy ten books on HTML & CSS and make mental note of starting date for studying them
29 After a month and five pages of the first book, decide to buy XSitePro
30 Made a mental note to study XSitePro until I can set up a simple website
31 Open XSitePro and discover that site templates are missing
32 Get obliging son to reinstall XSitePro and begin studying tutorial
33 Receive upgrade to XSitePro Mark 2 and discovere site templates are missing
34 Get obliging daughter to reinstall XSitePro2 and begin studying tutorial
35 Receive notices of renewal for first domain names - is it that time already?
36 Drop at least half of my first domain names
37 Make mental note to have a really good second year of domaining
38 It's now eight months on from then and I hope to publish my first mini-site . . . real soon

XSitePro, that was your first mistake.

Use something free, such as notepad++.

The money you used to buy XSitePro crap could have been invested into better domains.

Otherwise, good luck!

Thanks, SW. Guess I'm not as funny as I thought I was. :(

Actually, XSitePro is working well for me. 'Something free' needs an element of ability to go with it.

MAllie,

This was a good post, I enjoyed it.

I believe many users including myself went through this at one time or another.

I hope you have continued success in your domaining.

lol. mind numbing, isn't it? Learning anything related to web development is like learning a foreign language.
