New Laptop - Please suggest all the good software I should have (for Security)

What are some good addons for Firefox?
-- Ad blocker - which used to block all Java based ads, did not find it for FF 4

Any other good addons?

And virus/adware blockers etc..

on my old computer I have 3.6.16 version of Firefox and I don't see google ads.. or java based ads..

On the new computer I have FF 4.0 and I am still seeing Goolge ads!

What am I missing - I want to not see them to make sure I don't accidentally click on them. while checking the sites.

When I like to see the ad placement or how the ads look - I open i.e and close IE immediately.

Any suggestion on how to block google ads from loading on FF 4.0?

You can add their web developer tool.

Then in the menu, you can disable ads, images, anything.

You will have to do this each time you want to visit a site. I don't think you want to set this up as a default.

Firebug is on of them that appears at the bottom of my pages as a toolbar.

Webdeveloper appears as a third tool bar on top.

AdblockPlus for Firefox is good.

NoScript is the reason I won't consider switching to a browser other than Firefox. It's white-list based script blocking made convenient. It blocks all scripts, including javascript, java, and flash. It is easy to allow on a per-domain basis. It also protects against XSS. I feel vulnerable if I'm not using it.

It also drastically speeds up page load times, and cuts out almost all ads. It also blocks scripts from tracking sites, including most analytics companies (except those that use images instead of scripts for tracking, which are very few anymore). AdBlockPlus takes care of the rest.

Yeah I use this also. Avast uses the Kaspersky engine so its like getting their service for free. Its the best on the market for "free" anti-virus.

For malware I use Malwarebytes and Lavasoft's Ad-Adware
