As a newbie I noticed people mentioning SNAP? What is this and do you need it?

If a domain is about to expire or just expired how long does it take before it is available? Is SNAP a part of this process?

If I Snap a name, am I charged even if I don't get the name?

Yes, mbg, with snapnames.com you are charged even if they don't get the name. The snap, though, is good for a year. You can transfer it to a new name. So if the name you are after drops and snap does not catch it for you, you can transfer the snap to another domain.

You can also check out namewinner.com, namefox.com, and dropwizard.com for drop catching service. These three only charge for success. If you really want a name and/or if it's one you know that others will also pursue, it's prudent to increase your odds by using more than one service.
