I've noticed some domains have been on-hold for like 2-5 months. Any idea what the deal is?.

One domain I'm watching says it expires in 2011, but has been on-hold for about 3 months or so. Another I'm watching has been on-hold for at least 5 months, maybe longer, and the expiry date was coming up recently, then another year was added on, but its still on-hold.

Any of you come across this?. It reminds me of the past when you never really knew what was up. :)

Yes, there are lots of reasons domains can go on hold. Non payment, compliance issues, pending litigation, invalid nameservers being just a few. There are also several types of holds, but I can't rattle them off right now, maybe I'll find a link for you later.

Some terrible registrars such as aplus.net / names4ever.com will mistakenly take a perfectly good domain name and put it in hold state.

They did this to me on 5 perfectly paid up names, no disputes or anything, just a big mistake.

So, there's a ton of possibilities why this could happen.

I just talked to a company today that said they put their domain on "Legal Hold" with NSI to give more security.

In whois, it shows as if it's in the drop cycle.

I recently let 2 snaps expire that I have had on names "on hold" for a year or so.

Both @ NS!
