I discovered today that the domains q.com , x.com and z.com are all being used commercially - all the other 1 letter domains are held by ICANN... does anyone know how these three companies bagged these 1 letter domains??

If a one letter name expires then They don`t let it register anymore :(
But they don`t take them away I think?

arin controls the single letters and they were originally reserved for expansion of the rootservers ie sex.a.com sex.b.com but the need did not present and you cannot reg transfer them.

in order to get one you would need to buy the company that owns them.

there are some nets and orgs as well

i.net

x.org

and few others

it would be interesting to find out how they were grabbed or purchased and when the dates of reg were and why not more of them had been purchased. was there an error or a window or a sale that let them into the market

it's veryyyyyyyy cool to own one. :)
