Any opinions on the future and/or value of the .name extension?

I don't like the extension, and the extra dot is non-intuitive. It seems like it would be confusing for a lot of people, especially newer Internet users. If it gains much in popularity I'll be surprised.

I don't think they have any speculative value to speak of, but they are registering at a steady rate each month with us. The names we are registering are obviously meant for use by an individual and more than 90% are registered with email forwarding.

Complete waste of time. I can't see the point.

It's another me-too TLD. La-de-da. BFD.

Makes one wonder whether ICANN exists solely to generate reg revenue for (dontcha love em) those pesky and energetic registrars, both approved and not so approved, and (oh, don't forget) the almighty one, the NSOL/VERIsomething, beholden to noone, REGISTRY.

Don't like it either but maybe there is some search engine value with it..... like with any name.extension.... but in this case there is name.name.ext or phrase.ext......

People with knowledge could create value I guess but I don't like it personally - good luck with it!

I got a few dot .name free from my BulkRegister account - did not bother. It is a Silly concept anyway and hard to host or maintain.

I don't bother to register the .name for myself.

I tried to use "www" (e.g. www.abc.name) as the first name, but the system refused to register it. :D

An extension for the most part owned by speculators. Therefore, no resale value.

I would agree with the no resale value of this post, but I don't think this TLD is dominated by speculators at all. There are no speculator registrations at all in our listing - all are personal names of the people who registered the domain and their families.

Email seems to be a higher use than websites though.

I can't see any halfway savvy speculators seriously thinking .names have any real value.

One of the things I like about .name is the fact that speculators are uninterested in it... that leaves it free for people who actually want to use it! See my own site at dan.tobias.name.

And the extra "dot" might just encourage some people to get out of the rut of thinking of domain names as a flat namespace and realize the greater structure to them... at least I can dream...

I got two fairly reasonable .name domains:

detagged.domain.name

This is great for my detagged domain names business. Full of keyword matches so it already highly ranked on most search engines.

=================

register.dot.name

It seemed like a good idea at the time!
