Thanks in advance.

They are actual searchs done at http://overture.com/d/home/ from the previous month.

This is what makes the numbers somewhat reliable and important ...they represent whether a word / phrase was actually searched on an how large that "market" is ..

You already now "baseball" is big..so you check and sure enough 283,000 searchs were done on the keyword "baseball" last month..

Pretty simple..

Thankyou, Bid! :) Much appreciated!

I guess the numbers are also taken from the sites with which Overture is associated, ie: Google, AltaVista, etc?

Just a thought: If this is the only page from which search term numbers are calculated, do you think the numbers might be a bit skewed by the particular kind of visitors Overture.com would get?

Or perhaps the numbers are also taken from the sites with which Overture is associated, ie: Google, AltaVista, etc?

Does anyone know?

Good question,

I am assuming the searches are tallied from actual overture search..

I'm not a 100% ..that would be a good question to fire off an email to overture about..

I had always taken what ever number the inventory comes up with ...I multiply that by 4 ..(to get a rough idea of total searchs across all the se's..)

I then divide that by 2 ..to take out multiple searchs and webmasters searching to see where their site ranks etc..

or simply double your inventory number to get a rough total of all searchs for your particlular term.. so inventory is showing 283,000 searches .I simply double that #..so last month there were nearly 570,000 TOTAL searches (combining the top for SE's) for "baseball"

and yes, the numbers can be skewed by each individual search engine.. some engines attract differnt types of searches.. some are more business , some more product some more reference..

thats why these results are ONLY to be used as a "tool" .. just to give you a fair ball park figure.

The most important thing about the inventory results is simply they give you a rough idea if there is a market and an estimate of hopw large that market might be.

Compare that to Google "results" ..those "results" are showing you how much competition you have !.. not necessarily popularity or market..

The idea for a retailer then is to find HIGH number of searches on inventory and LOW number of results on google..thats the key..
