Process of backordering behind the scenes

Can anyone tell me the full process behind the scenes as to what happens when somone backorders a domain. I plan on hiring and having my system created for my private use however I just want to make sure theres nothing I don't know about.

I know I will need multiple servers with the script on all of them.

But what else do I need?
