This word means "whore" in french and is slang for copulation in the UK.

In addition to appraisals, I would be interested to hear from any UK natives on how commonly this word is used there.

Well it is an actual word in french (rather than slang) so that is where most of its value comes from anyway.

The UK has heard much about Putin, but not Putain.

I thought Putain was British slang for radiation?

The common British slang is "pro" for "prostitute".
