I have had two people contact me about the same domain .com domain name. Both don't seem to have any connection to said domain name but both are asking if I'd be interested in it.

I did a whois on the domain and can see its status is 'redemptionPeriod', however, the expiry date doesn't seem to be until middle of March.

I was under the impression that redemptionPeriod status meant that only 30 days and the domain would be deleted.

Am I wrong?

And what do you think these two people who emailed me plan to do should I reply to them?

If I am interested in the domain perhaps it's better for me to just wait and see it get dropped. It's not the kind of name anyone else would probably go for it just is relevant to my one of my many other domains.

You're right; the redemption period typically lasts 30 days before a domain is deleted. Those contacting you might be looking to broker the domain or profit by flipping it. If you're interested, waiting for it to drop could save you money, especially if the name isn't in high demand.

They are looking to get a commitment to a price, so that they can decide how much to bid when the name drops and is auctioned.

Sometimes, there are folks who will get an idea whether a soon-to-expire name has resale value, find a buyer, and then get in touch with the current registrant to buy it from them and pay the redemption fee, in order to then sell it to the buyer.

If I am interested in the domain perhaps it's better for me to just wait and see it get dropped.

Depends on the relative likelihood of someone else placing a backorder on it.
