Is there any rule that prohibits Registrars from renewing a domain if the customer does not renew it? Suppose for example if somebody chooses not to renew a domain thats worth mega bucks, could the Registrar renew the domain and keep, sell it etc.. ?

this is not the job of registrar . famous registrars running a business worth may be million and they don't care and run after few bucks .
