One last thing about dot com names VS new extensions. Try asking someone off the street if they ever heard of "CreditReview.com" (made that one up).... They probably haven't, is my guess. So although, the "extension" dot com is well known in the states, not every individual dot com name is. Take a step back and think about that for a minute...
To further illustrate my point, what is the difference in "CreditReview.com" and "CreditReview.biz"... if you think about it, not a whole heck of a lot that would make a difference. You still have to promote each site if you want visitors, and you will still have to optimize... And you still have to give the person the entire URL address as we could easily be talking about "CreditReviw.org". Some say the "ending" matters because people only "trust" .com. That may be true, but if you can offer a product or service to someone, and give it to them at a decent price you will have repeat business no matter extension you have.
Now if you are in the "speculation" business, it's clear that you'd have an easier time selling dot com names. Maybe that is all what we are talking about. However if I were in the speculation business, I would make damn sure I had more than one product to sell in my portfolio. You can't keep selling "Twoword" .com's for the prices we were getting a few years ago. Hence my advice to go after some "short" one-word, industry driven .biz/.us/.ws names.
izopodian philosophy: Yes, .com is still "king" but by extension only. Everything else is pretty much what you make of it
