Could you recommend a secondary DNS service with unlimited (or reasonably high) number of domains (i.e. not something like $4 per domain and month)?

I don't know what a "secondary DNS service" is. Is that like a host or something else?

http://www.gratisdns.de free (2 secondary servers)
http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com $30/year for 50 domains
http://www.xname.org free
http://www.secondary.com free for 5 domains
http://www.twisted4life.com free for 10 domains
http://www.everydns.net free (4 servers)
http://www.gratisdns.dk free (4 secondary servers but the interface is in Danish...)

Thanks for the list. dnsmadeeasy looks good.
Sorry that I didn't make clearer - I wasn't searching
for a free service, these are usually slow and you
cannot ask them to fix things ...

To answer the 'what is':
Most registries require 2 nameservers to resolve
your domainname (i.e. make an IP adress from the name).

If you have just one dedicated server, you
can put your primary nameserver there,
but you'll need a secondary. If you have a hosted
webservice your provider will do all that for you.

easyDNS.com has been around since very early of the Internet boom. They charge US$14.95 per domain/year (with bulk purchase rates available); don't know if that fits in your budget or not.

I can also recommend easydns, though it is "slightly" more expensive. I pay $ 89 per year for 10 domains and then I get four secondary name servers on three different networks and a mail backup. It is a good price and a *very* reliable service.

I have used many of the free services above and they are not bad and you can't compare them with e.g. granitecanyon.com which also is free but has had a lot of down time.

Normally I run my own nondelegated primary on a cable connection and use six-eight slaves on different networks. I have found this to be a very reliable soloution. The german servers are good and xname.org is also good and reliable, it is located in France.

The problem I have found with free servers is that many of them are on cable or adsl connections and they suffer from a lot of down time due to problems with their ISP.

The minumum is two name servers but you can have up to thirteen with many registrars. I am of the opinion that you should try to have as many as possible and hav your name servers spread around in different parts of the world.
